Arabic version of the CARE Measure

Al-Habbal K, Djoundourian A, Nassar E, Tayara Z, Mercer SW, Abi-Habib R. Reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) measure. Fam Pract. 2022 Nov 22;39(6):1176-1182. doi: 10.1093/fampra/cmac047. PMID: 35616114.

The originator of the CARE Measure, Professor Stewart Mercer, endorses the above Arabic version of the CARE Measure developed by Al-Habbal and colleagues, which was validated following qualitative work exploring perception of empathy in an Arabic speaking country:

Al-Habbal K, Arawi T. Physicians’ empathy levels in a primary care setting: perceptions of patients and their physicians, a qualitative study. Fam Pract. 2020;37(6):834–838.

It should be noted that although this was validated in only one Arabic speaking country, it uses the formal Arabic language that is used across the Arab nations. The Arabic CARE Measure can be downloaded here.

If you would like to use the measure please contact Khairat Al-Habbal; khairatalhabbal@gmail.com

PLEASE NOTE:

Another Arabic version of the CARE Measure was recently published by Elfaki et al:

Elfaki A., AlQarni A. M., AlGhamdi A. A., AlShammari M. A., Nasir F., Alabdulqader R. Arabic Validity of the (CARE) Measure for Improving Medical and Mental Health Services. Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience . 2022;2022:6. doi: 10.1155/2022/6530019.6530019

The authors state in the paper that permission to translate the measure was granted by Professor Mercer. This is incorrect information and Professor Mercer does not endorse the use of this version.

Furthermore, the paper was retracted by the journal in October 2023:

Intelligence And Neuroscience C. Retracted: Arabic Validity of the (CARE) Measure for Improving Medical and Mental Health Services. Comput Intell Neurosci. 2023 Oct 4;2023:9798169. Doi: 10.1155/2023/9798169. PMID: 37829856; PMCID: PMC10567217.
